A relationship can feel exciting and still be moving too fast for you to think clearly. Slowing down is not the same as losing interest.
Say what you want without apologizing for it
Simple language works: “I like where this is going, and I want to take a little more time before making bigger decisions.” You do not need a dramatic justification.
Reduce the decisions, not the connection
You can keep talking and seeing each other while postponing major commitments, travel, financial involvement or exclusivity until both people have enough real-world experience together.
Keep normal life intact
Continue seeing friends, keeping routines and making independent decisions. A promising relationship should fit into your life rather than immediately replacing it.
Use time to test consistency
Time answers questions that chemistry cannot. Does the person follow through? Handle disappointment well? Respect your pace? Remain consistent when the novelty wears off?
Pay attention to the response
A healthy connection can usually tolerate a reasonable request to slow down. Pressure, guilt or anger in response is information worth taking seriously.
Slower does not mean colder. It means allowing trust, evidence and commitment to develop at a pace you can actually evaluate.
